I started discovering of Zend Framework and was confronted with a problem. When IÂ’ve placed my test sample into siteÂ’s subdirectory (http://localhost/test/), default router tried to find TestController which is not exists of course and routed me to IndexController/noRoute. ItÂ’s not good for me. I decided to create my own router.

Zend FrameworkÂ’s View class has very bad capability for extending. It contains template variables but does not allow to access them, it has array with different pathes (templates, filters), but does not allow to add another type or access them. Therefor only way to use Smarty with Zend Framework is to abandon Zend_View and manipulate Smarty object directly.

Good news - the Zend Framework License is now compatible with the GPL. This means you can use the ZF for your own GPL-licensed PHP project.

Like many other PHP developers I’m keeping an eye on the progress of the Zend Framework. It’s currently still in the very early stages of development but is nonetheless worth “getting to know”. These are some notes from a play around with the current View functionality.

As we embrace the changes that 2006 will bring to the PHP community, I can but only wonder about what is to become of PHP 5. Talk and debate over PHP 6 is already a hot topic, and despite being in a stable release for over 2 years PHP 5 has failed to see any significant kind of adoption rates, lingering at an astonishingly low 4.2%. Will PHP 5 be the version that everyone 'skipped', or could the Zend Framework be its saviour?

A great overview over the Zend Framework, on PHPIT, covering all major compoenents. Even if it's related to the first public Zend Framework version it's a good startup for any new ZF developer. It has code samples for: Zend_Controller and Zend_View, Zend_DB, Zend_Feed, Zend_InputFilter.
