Introducing Zend Framework

A set of screencasts designed to introduce a new user to the Zend Framework. They go over installation of the zend framework through creating a basic content website.

Znajduje się w nim sporo dodatkowych komentarzy i wyjasnień. Samouczek jest w języku polskim. W artykule tym tworzymy prostą ,acz kompletną aplikację napisaną z wykorzystaniem Zend Framework.

1.0.0 Compatible. A basic application layer to sit on top of the framework to make it easy to be able to quickly jump into development. Includes: a modularized component structure; main application controls, logging and configuration; graceful Smarty template integration; basic content structures controls with search engine friendly URLs; and class autoloading and easy deployment capability.

When I wrote the previous part of this review, covering the Registry and Database classes of the Zend Framework, the Framework was still at version 0.9.3 Beta. It has since reached version 1.0.0 Release Candidate, and interestingly enough, most of the changes affect the components I’ll be reviewing this time.

The Zend Framework is written entirely in PHP 5 Object Oriented conventions and is currently versioned at 0.9.3 Beta, with a full Release Candidate coming in the immediate future. PHP 5 is a major upgrade over previous incarnations of Object Oriented programming in PHP, and its one of the main reasons I choose the Zend Framework.
The framework is built around modular components that can be used as standalone solutions or in conjunction with other components. In this respect they went to great lengths to make the different components very extendable and portable through the creation of interfaces (another PHP 5 caveat) and making sure the components stay as loosely coupled as possible.

After reading many tutorials, I decided it was time to write one myself. Not because the ones out there are bad, most of them are really good reads, and will get you started with the Zend Framework in a jiffy. But in my opinion they take a wrong approach towards getting people started in application development.

In this tutorial, a tiny demo application will be constructed to highlight key features of the Zend Framework and demonstrate how its components could be integrated and used together. Although the demo application is not intended for production use, the working application provides a simple skeleton for building Zend Framework applications. Even advanced PHP developers may find some parts of the demo enlightening to see how the Zend Framework might differ from other frameworks in its use and application of design patterns and components providing popular functionality.

in this tutorial, we will design a sample application for the zend framework, putting an emphasis on application design. Starting from the models we will work our way up to a more or less complete application.
